The Danish government has announced significant changes to its temporary protection scheme for Ukrainian citizens, as reported by the Ministry of Immigration and Integration on June 25. The new policy targets men aged 23 to 60 who are subject to military service in Ukraine and lack official exemption. Under the updated regulations, these individuals will no longer be eligible for residency permits under the special act implemented following the 2022 Russian invasion.
Minister for Immigration and Integration, Morten Bødskov, stated that the move is designed to ensure that Denmark’s residency rules are not exploited to evade military service. “Denmark stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine in their fight for freedom. Our residency rules are not intended to be used as a means to avoid mobilization for the defense of Ukraine,” Bødskov said. He emphasized that utilizing such mechanisms undermines Ukraine’s defensive efforts and its ability to repel Russian aggression. The new restrictions will not affect residence permits already granted to those currently in the country.
This decision comes amid broader European discussions regarding the reception of Ukrainian refugees. As of early May 2026, approximately 47,600 Ukrainians were living in Denmark under the temporary protection status. While the country remains a steadfast supporter of Ukraine, the government is adjusting its policies to align with the evolving demands of the conflict. The integration authorities have confirmed that they will coordinate closely with relevant agencies to manage these transitions effectively. Denmark continues to provide extensive humanitarian and financial aid, maintaining its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s long-term stability while ensuring that migration policies remain consistent with international solidarity efforts.
