The United Kingdom has launched a project to develop a new generation of affordable, long-range missiles for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, designed to operate entirely independent of American technology. According to a Bloomberg report, this initiative seeks to provide Ukraine with weaponry capable of striking targets at a range exceeding 500 kilometers. The project, codenamed “Brakestop,” was initiated by the UK Ministry of Defence in late 2024 to bolster the Ukrainian defense industrial base.
Key defense players, including MBDA, MGI Engineering, and Rotron Aerospace, are currently collaborating on three distinct weapon variants. Testing of these systems is scheduled to occur in the coming months, with trials planned both within the UK and in Ukraine. While these missiles may not match the explosive power of the sophisticated Storm Shadow cruise missiles, their production cost is estimated at nearly half that of their predecessors, roughly £400,000 (over $529,000) per unit excluding the warhead. This price point is expected to facilitate large-scale deployment.
A fundamental requirement of the project is the complete exclusion of US-sourced components and technical data. This strategic shift serves to minimize dependence on American defense supply chains, ensuring that Ukraine can utilize the weapons without the potential for political restrictions often attached to US military aid. Each missile will be equipped with a warhead weighing at least 225 kg, maintaining significant destructive capability.
Manufacturers have expressed readiness to ramp up production, potentially delivering up to 40 missiles per month within three to four months of receiving a confirmed order. If the UK government does not finalize a contract, the private firms are prepared to offer their technology directly to the Ukrainian government or other European allies. This move highlights the growing trend of European nations taking greater responsibility for regional security and support for Ukraine.
As the war continues, the acquisition of such strike capabilities is vital for countering Russian aggression. By expanding its domestic and allied-supplied long-range strike options, Ukraine aims to disrupt enemy logistics and infrastructure deep behind the front lines.
