In another devastating act of violence against Ukrainian non-combatants, a Russian FPV drone strike killed three civilians in the frontline city of Nikopol, located in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Hanzha, writing on his official Telegram channel on Tuesday, the enemy targeted people who were simply traveling along a local road. The strike instantly claimed the lives of an 87-year-old mother and her 51-year-old son. Law enforcement officers are currently working at the scene to determine the identity of the third victim.
The official shared a harrowing photograph from the site of the attack, showing a completely charred wheelchair. This image serves as a brutal testament to the indiscriminate nature of Russia’s drone warfare, which increasingly targets everyday citizens in adjacent zones. Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces have targeted two districts of the Dnipropetrovsk region more than ten times, utilizing artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles to terrorize the local population.
Analysts emphasize that the use of FPV (first-person view) drones represents a highly deliberate form of warfare. Unlike unguided artillery or missiles, FPV drone operators have a direct video feed of their target. This means the operator who directed the lethal drone at the road in Nikopol saw the victims, recognized them as civilians—including an elderly woman in a wheelchair—and chose to detonate the explosive device anyway.
This incident highlights the urgent need for Ukraine’s partners to supply advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems and short-range air defense units to safeguard civilian infrastructure in cities close to the frontline. Nikopol, situated directly across the Dnipro River from Russian-occupied territory and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, remains one of the most vulnerable urban centers. Without adequate counter-drone technology, local residents face daily life-threatening risks.
