As reported by Politico, Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveiled an aggressive new sanctions package targeting Russia’s shadow fleet, alongside a vital nuclear energy agreement designed to secure Ukraine’s power grid for the coming winters.
The newly introduced sanctions target Russia’s covert shipping operations. This move comes immediately after British forces successfully intercepted a sanctioned Russian oil tanker over the weekend, demonstrating the UK’s commitment to active enforcement. Beyond the shadow fleet, the restrictions target key financial networks used by Moscow to bypass Western sanctions and procure military hardware. Furthermore, the UK is imposing a strict embargo on vessels transporting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), closing a critical loophole in the Kremlin’s export revenue streams.
In parallel, the UK and Ukraine concluded a pivotal nuclear cooperation agreement. Prime Minister Starmer and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed on a two-year deal for the supply of enriched uranium to Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear operator, Energoatom. The agreement will be executed by British-based firm Urenco, backed by a £210 million credit facility from UK Export Finance. This partnership represents a decisive step in permanently severing Ukraine’s remaining dependencies on Russian nuclear fuel, ensuring energy sovereignty.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized that Russia’s aggression poses an existential threat to all of Europe, making it imperative to choke off the revenues fueling Putin’s campaign while guaranteeing Ukraine’s energy security.
