Recent satellite imagery and intelligence evaluations indicate a massive build-up of Russian military presence along the borders of Finland and the Baltic states. According to an investigation published by The Sun, in coordination with Scandinavian broadcasters SVT, DR, NRK, and Delfi, Moscow is aggressively expanding its military infrastructure on the northwestern flank. Additional intelligence reports highlight the expansion of Russian bases in Murmansk, Pechenga, and other border regions, where tens of thousands of troops could soon be permanently stationed.
Active construction and heavy military equipment clusters have been identified in Petsamo (10 km from Norway), Petrozavodsk (19 km from Finland), Sapernoye (8 km from Finland), and Baltiysk in the Kaliningrad region (30 km from Poland). New military barracks and facilities are also being erected in Kirillovskoye and Kandalaksha. Thomas Nilsson, chief of Swedish Military Intelligence, emphasized that these developments pose an extraordinary threat that Nordic nations must take seriously. According to him, these bases are designed to ensure readiness for a potential larger conflict with NATO rather than mere posturing.
While NATO leadership urges vigilance, European politicians are preparing for worst-case scenarios. Polish Prime Minister Donald Donald Tusk previously warned that Russia could attempt an attack on a NATO nation in the near future. However, while Western allies focus on regional deterrence, Ukraine is actively dismantling Russia’s military potential from within.
In recent months, Ukrainian special forces and long-range drones have targeted crucial logistics hubs of the Russian Baltic Fleet. A key success was the strike on the 15th Naval Arsenal in Velikaya Izhora, Leningrad Oblast. This critical logistics center, located roughly 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine, stored sea mines, torpedoes, and naval missiles. Satellite images confirmed widespread thermal damage and ammunition detonations inside the base. Concurrently, a drone attack on the Kronstadt naval base near St. Petersburg damaged the Russian corvette ‘Boykiy’.
These surgical strikes demonstrate that the Russian Baltic Fleet is following a trajectory similar to the Black Sea Fleet—losing its operational freedom due to the destruction of its rear supply lines. By forcing Russia to redeploy air defense systems deeper into its own territory, Ukraine is effectively neutralizing threats to Scandinavian and Baltic security, proving that the Ukrainian front remains the primary shield for the entire European continent.
